It is with great concern we receive the news of a fire incident that occurred at Cafe’ Tiolo in Male’ City’s Henveiru Ward on Friday night. The fire had also spread to the adjacent 10-storey office building.
Investigations on the incident are still underway, and a cause of the fire is yet to be determined. However, the fire was able to spread rapidly to the adjacent building due to the type of aluminum cladding used outside the building.
Another fire also broke out in the city at a shop located on Janavaree Magu two days later on Sunday afternoon. The frequent occurrence of such fire incidents in the highly densely congested capital of Male’ City is one of our biggest concerns.
In order to ensure better fire safety standards in construction, we urge the authorities to review and improve the relevant laws, regulations, and enforcement with the help of the industry’s stakeholders.
